I was born in 1941. as JOSIP, to mother Marija from Blato on Korčula and Pero ŠKERLJ from Dubrovnik. I finished the elementary and then the High School of Economics in Dubrovnik. In the summer of AD 1958/59 I modeled to J. Trostmann and V. Šerbu; in those years we frequented Kosta Strajnić. With him we felt the French painting nuance. I enrolled the Academy of Arts in Zagreb in 1961. We were a team, liked to work to no end, even if hungry, competing, swaying on th wine... Next to me are L. Peko, I Mujezinović, opposite I. Friščić, R. Labaš, Z. Ćosić, R,Janjić-Jobo... I kept on calling to Kosta Strajnić surrounded with artists, people that loved him, the art, the painting. Trostmann kept on occurring, so did Šerbu who got married and went to England to visit our friends Turner and Shakespeare. Milovan Stanić would also show up, portaying Kosta, dusting Kosta s books Occasionally, I would restrain my in-discipline by doing some neo-icons, to the blessing of Master Kosta. My studies were interesting, dynamic. I wandered all over my Homeland, sketch-book in hand, wrote poetry, fed on oats and milk, matured in galleries and movie-halls. I graduated in 1965., returned to Dubrovnik, found a place to work and fought for years on end not to lose it. Then I got a position of an arts pedagogue at a school, and was commended as the ¨Meritable Arts Pedagogue of Croatia¨. I would often sit with Pulitika, Masle and Dulčić, go for outings, talk about important little things. I remember my first one-man (Zagreb, 1969) by the stagefright and an impulse to take everything away, destroy it, to run away. Yet that one was of the most valuable exhibitions (to this day, too). The Croatian Springtime 1971. an exhibition in the Old City of Zagreb, not one single visitor. Terrible events in the main Square, tanks, police beating up students.., I joined the youth ¨LAUS magazine, and ran from the L to the S. Got married, an award at the salon of Youth, a son. ¨Naked Games¨, my first volume of poetry, came out in 1972, with a troubadour flavour. Ivo Dragojević, an actor with a troubadour flawour. Ivo Dragojević, an actor with the Dubrovnik Teatre of Marin Drzić, presented my poems with inspiration and vogue. Then other projects followed, like the ¨Public Bird¨, ¨Stradun¨... I tried my hand as a stage designer in ¨King s Cherries¨ . |
For several years I attended poetry evenings, and spoke my verse with a noodle in my throat. ¨A Diary of Poems¨ (1974), ¨A Stroll Through the City¨(with my drawings), ¨Landcsape with my Wife in Yellow Wind¨, ¨Paper Woman¨, ¨Man Who Liked The Morning Smiles¨ (prose), one volume almost every year... The trilogy ¨Joseph s Rib¨(creativity), ¨A Score and Occasional Four-Letter Word¨(an ode to life): ¨Twilight¨ (underway) will speak about insanity and old age. I have also published books for children, humouristic-detective things...and then again, poetry and prose... ¨Dubrovnik my lover¨(poetry).¨Dubrovnik Nocturno¨ (prose), dedicated to those whose breadth defended The City. I don't like planes, still I was flying like Ikarus and landing on Kennedy airport I maybe understood Pollock. Later I climbed one woman (Lady Liberty), I ate Big Mack, I was in Metropolitan opera and I thought for a moment: I might be an artist in New York. I also visited Israel (Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Masada, writing poems in the Ginot Yom hotel in Netary) and felt the smell of Italy. In 1998 I published the book of poems ¨Towns¨ (the little places of my heart). I also published the, book of poems for children (I wrote them when my son was born in 1974).In 1998 I received ¨Dubrovnik City Award¨. a high national decoration ¨Red Danice hrvatske s likom Marka Marulića¨(Croatian Star of Merit in Art Danica Hrvatska with Marko Marulić Medal) and in 1999 I was invited to Osijek to receive the first prize of the Salon of Valdinger, but in spite of these prizes, I don't feel that I'm anything better now than at the beginning of my career. Years follow the eclipses, sunrises, smiles - I still work with joy, and am composing these very lines with the idea that much of what I have done has not been in vain. September, 1997.
